Small Business Blogging Tips | Social Media Today
Several friends weighed in on Facebook this week with topics they wanted me to write about. My client Heather of Makes Scents Natural Spa Line voiced something that I hear a lot:
?How do you do it all when life keeps throwing you curve balls? How do you keep up with social media and blogging when life happens??I just wish I had time to write a stash of blogs that I could post when I don?t have time to write. Same with Facebook and Twitter.?
I think Heather speaks for a lot of small business owners. She gets it. She understands the importance of blogging. She wants to blog. But where she struggles is finding time. Small business owners and operators are very busy people. They may work 12 or 14 hours a day, mostly taking care of their core business. For Heather, that is the manufacturing and distribution of high-end natural spa products. She and her husband, Nate and the few employees they have are incredibly busy. So when is she supposed to find time to be involved in social media, not to mention blog?
Part of my job is to help my clients, and you, find ways to make blogging and social media more manageable, and make sure that it?s not a total time suck. So here are a few of my tips for making blogging more manageable, some of which can also be applied to other social media duties:
1. Create a realistic, manageable schedule
Don?t bite off more than you can chew. I often suggest starting with one post a week. If all you do is 300-500 words each week, that right there makes the task much more manageable. You don?t have to blog every day. You don?t have to write a novel. Create a schedule and keep to it. You can even plot out topics a month or two in advance.
2. Don?t take it all on your self
Just because you decide to blog doesn?t mean you have to write everything. Enlist employees, vendors, and others from businesses with which you deal. Guest bloggers can really do a good job of easing the burden. With social media, assign some of the duties to a trusted and well trained employee. Breaking up the tasks will free up more of your time.
3. Keep an idea file
One of the problems with blogging is the task of coming up with ideas and topics. Don?t wait until the last moment. Jot down notes throughout the week as ideas come to you. Keep a file with ideas you get from notes, magazines, and the internet. Sure, it?s not the greenest thing, but if need be you can print out pages and put them in a physical file folder. Or you can keep a document of ideas on your computer desktop. There are also apps like Evernote that make it easy to keep notes and save clippings from online.
When I get ideas I just open up a post draft on my WordPress site and throw in a link and a few notes so I can go back to it later.
4. Don?t reinvent the wheel
Don?t feel like ?you have to come up with completely new content. You might already have content on your website or on offline printed materials that can easily be converted into blog posts.
5. Remember WHY you are doing it
There are many reasons for blogging, which include everything from search engine optimization and building an archive of great content to showing that you are an authority in your particular field. Keep reminding yourself that there is a very real purpose for blogging; it?s not just an empty exercise. There are goals and there is a payoff. When you remember that, it might give you more motivation.
6. It?s part of your job
Ultimately, the blogging, social media, and marketing are all a part of your job. Sure you might really be in the business of manufacturing a product, selling something, or delivering a service, but that?s not all you do. The marketing of those products and services is also a part of your job. It?s not just something you do in your free time, if you have any. It?s an important part of your job that must be done.
7. Have fun!
Hopefully you enjoy what you do. If you love your job, you can learn to love blogging about it. I love blogging. I enjoy the writing. Find a way ?to write about the things you enjoy, and suddenly the task becomes a lot more manageable.
Those are a few tips, but I?m sure there are more. What other ways have you found to make the task of blogging more manageable?

Queens of the Stone Age Concert Review - Metro Lollapalooza Pre ...
Queens of the Stone Age kicked off Lollapalooza weekend a bit early with a special pre-show Thursday night at Metro...
"Rock is dead" has become the popular go-to of late, especially as one of the reasons when it comes to explaining declining album sales.
But following the June 4th release of their sixth studio album, ...Like Clockwork, Queens of the Stone Age debuted at number one on the Billboard albums chart selling a whopping 91,000 albums in an era where people don't buy them, knocking the ubiquitous Daft Punk from the number one perch in the process.
All of which places them as arguably one of the biggest rock bands in the land as they approach their Friday night slot as one of Lollapalooza's 2013 headliners... making their intimate Thursday night pre-show at Metro that much more special before Friday's victory lap in front of a few more people in Grant Park.
"We're always so happy to come to Chicago, an amazing city..." said frontman Josh Homme. ?"This is a wonderful place, the Metro... really f---ing cool."
From the get-go Thursday, the band plowed through an hour and forty-five minute set that focused largely on ...Like Clockwork and 2002's Songs for the Deaf (those two album comprised more than half the set).
Following a brief pause early on when the band just couldn't seem to get the guitars loud enough (Homme frequently motioned for more volume for both his and Troy Van Leeuwen's guitars), the band continued to deliver their unique sound virtually non-stop, a riff-heavy mix that includes elements of everything from metal to blues.
But the key throughout was the band's incredible ability to craft an indelible groove. ?That particular element of the band's arsenal was on full display often but most notably on a pair of new tracks: ?"If I had a Tail" and "Smooth Sailing."
The former, despite not even being one of ...Like Clockwork's singles (yet), was yelled for throughout the night and the crowd went ballistic when the band finally complied. ?Both of those tracks are indicative of the new album's biggest strength - a pop sensibility that's present under the sludge and had people dancing Thursday night.
Thursday night's crowd was great. ?Everyone was familiar with all of the material, well versed even in the new stuff... And for a band that's been around since the late nineties, you don't usually get that.
But it was the more rocking moments Thursday night that had the crowd in a frenzy - specifically a fantastic, blues drenched jam that allowed the band to stretch out during "Burn the Witch" and the pummeling one-two punch of "I Think I Lost my Headache" and "Go With the Flow" back-to-back.
Though the best was saved for last. ?"This song is the best way we know of saying thank you" said Homme as the band launched into a drawn out version of "A Song for the Dead." ?Each band member got their chance to shine within the song's nooks and crannies while the false stops and frenetic guitar attack gave the crowd every opportunity to thrash with reckless abandon.
I've never seen a Metro crowd empty out en masse the way this one did following "A Song for the Dead" - there was just clearly no way the band was coming back for another encore after their performance of that song.
Long considered the kings of stoner rock, it was a thrill to watch Queens of the Stone Age perform at the top of their powers as one of the biggest rock acts in the world Thursday night onstage at one of the smallest, warmest clubs in the city.
I joked on Facebook?before the show that Thursday's Queens of the Stone Age set at Metro had the potential to be the best thing we'd see all weekend... Now I'm thinking it might have been the best thing I'll see in 2013.

WWE Live Event Results From Shanghai (8/2): John Cena Cuts Chinese Promo, Four Title Matches, More
The show was very good with the arena being about half full. The start time was 7:30 and in the 30 minutes beforehand they were showing various videos branded RAW 20th Anniversary and finally a WM29 recap.
Justin Roberts welcomed us and we were set to go with our opening contest:
Triple Threat (Winner receives a shot at the US Title later in the show): Zack Ryder Vs Antonio Cesaro Vs Heath Slater
Both Ryder and Cesaro were over with the crowd. Ryder/Cesaro controlled most of the match with Slater being thrown to the outside over and over as a comedy spot. Slater eventually got back in and Ryder got tossed out. It wasn't long before Cesaro hit Slater with the neutralizer and went for the pin only for Ryder to run back in and toss him out of the ring and score the pinfall on Slater himself. After everyone had left Slater walked to the back with a round of applause from the crowd.
Winner: Zack Ryder
Aksana Vs Natalya
Natalya was very over with the crowd and controlled most of the match with several sharpshooter teases only to reversed by Aksana. When she eventually locked in the sharpshooter the crowd went wild and Aksana eventually tapped out.
Winner: Natalya
A Ryback promo aired where he said he would challenge John Cena later tonight.
Jinder Mahal Vs Great Khali
Jinder worked the crowd from the start by shouting 3MB to a chorus of boos. He worked on Khali for a while before Khali regained momentum and won with the chop.
Winner: Great Khali
Zack Ryder Vs Dean Ambrose (US Title)
When The Shields music hit everyone was looking around for them but they appeared in the entrance way. Reigns and Rollins just came out on stage but left as Ambrose made his way to the ring. Ambrose really worked the crowd and this was a good back and forth match with Ambrose picking up the win after some very near falls by Ryder.
Winner: Dean Ambrose
There was a 15 minute interval here where Justin Roberts showed us pre-signed photos of John Cena and Ryback that could be purchased at the merchandise stand.
The Miz Vs Curtis Axel (IC Title)
The Miz entered to a huge pop and lay on the ropes drinking water awaiting Axel. Axel (minus Heyman) entered to a chorus of boos. Both men immediately worked the crowd with Miz putting his hands up and getting cheered and Axel doing the same only to get boos. This went on for a couple of minutes. Good paced match back and forth with each man gaining and losing momentum. During the match there was a "We want Heyman" chant. The finish saw Axel rolling up Miz and using the ropes to get the pin. Fans chanted "this is awesome" throughout the match.
Winner: Curtis Axel
Daniel Bryan/Kane Vs Seth Rollins/Roman Reigns (Tag Titles)
Daniel Bryan was WAY over with the crowd. All 3 of The Shield came to ringside. Some good spots in this match like Reigns asking for the tag and Bryan tagged in Kane to which Reigns wanted out. The fans were chanting "Yes" and "No" from the beginning to the end. Again a good back and forth match filled with Yes chants and the end came with Ambrose interfering and causing a DQ after Kane hit a double chokeslam on Rollins/Reigns. After the match, Sheild tried to use a triple powerbomb on Kane, but Bryan made the save. Bryan and Kane then chokeslamed Reigns and Rollins. They left by standing on the ramp with Bryan shouting Yes.
Winners: Daniel Bryan/Kane (By DQ)
John Cena Vs Ryback (WWE Title)
Ryback got a good reception from the crowd but of course Cena got the biggest pop in this one. Cena took the mic and delivered an entire promo in Chinese which the crowd loved. I must say that his Chinese was pretty good, though maybe a little funny. Cena dominated most of the match but Ryback did get a good bit of defence in and even got a few "Feed Me More" chants and there was one person who shouted "Goldberg" but it didn't catch on. The crowd chanted "Let's go Cena!" and "Cena sucks!" as usual. Cena eventually won with the AA. He delivered another promo in Chinese after and then spoke English and explained he had been learning Chinese as he cant wait to come back to Shanghai in the near future but they want to expand the tour to cities like Beijing and Hong Kong. He posed with the title, went to the fans around ringside touching hands and signed a few autographs and left.
Winner: John Cena
Justin Roberts thanked us and they played Fandagos music to end the show.
