Pakistan hands over Gwadar port to Chinese company

Beijing News.Net Monday 18th February, 2013

President Asif Ali Zardari, speaking on the occasion, expressed confidence that the agreement will give new impetus to Pakistan-China relations, Radio Pakistan reported.

"Today, the agreement is transferred from the Port of Singapore Authority to China Overseas Ports Holding Company Limited," he announced.

Zardari expressed confidence that the award of the contract will open new opportunities, particularly for the people of Balochistan.

He said it will "give new impetus to Pakistan-China relations and take further our political cooperation into the realm of economic cooperation".

The president said handing over of Gwadar Port operations to China is "a manifestation of our growing ties and also shows the trust Pakistan has in the Chinese ability to deliver on our infrastructure projects".

He said development of a trade corridor linking Xinjiang to the Middle East through Gwadar Port will enhance trade and commerce not only between the two countries but also in the region.

Zardari said the port also has strategic importance for China as around 60 percent of China's crude oil comes from the Gulf countries that are close to Gwadar.

He said Gwadar is now a potential hub of trade and commerce in the region. It also holds the key to bring together the countries of Central Asia.

In his speech on the occasion, Chinese ambassador Liu Jian said the transfer of Gwadar Port's operations to China will bring tangible benefits to the two countries and contribute to peace, stability and development of the region.

He said Gwadar Port is part of greater framework of economic cooperation between Pakistan and China.

Lil Wayne, Chris Bosh: Rapper Disses NBA, Slept With Miami Heat Star's Wife

Lil Wayne claims he slept with Miami Heat player Chris Bosh's wife Adrienne Williams.

He said as much on stage in the midst of a profanity-laced tirade at a Beats Audio event during All-Star Weekend. [WATCH VIDEO]

He led the audience in "Fuck the NBA!" and "Fuck the Miami Heat" chants, respectively, before issuing a variety of verbal taunts.

"Let them niggas know I'm from the streets," he said. "Ain't no Twitter beef. Take it to the fucking streets, nigga. Fuck all them niggas. Fuck Lebron [James]. Fuck [Dwayne] Wade. Fuck Chris Bosh....And I fucked Chris Bosh's wife."

The source of his frustration? The Miami Heat reportedly asked the NBA to ban Weezy from any and all All-Star Weekend festivities. If you'll recall, Wayne was kicked out of a Miami Heat game last week after reportedly making a 'gun gesture' at a fan.

"The NBA banned me from all NBA events," he said. "Because the Miami Heat told them to ban me."

British shoppers saying nay to meat after horse scandal

LONDON (Reuters) - The discovery of horsemeat in products sold as beef has shocked many British consumers into buying less meat, a survey showed on Monday.

The furore, which erupted in Ireland last month and then spread quickly across Europe, has led to ready meals being pulled from supermarket shelves and damaged people's confidence in the food on their plate.

It also raised concerns over food labelling and the complex supply chain across the European Union, putting pressure on governments to explain lapses in quality control.

A fifth of adults said they had started buying less meat after traces of horse DNA were found in some products, according to the poll conducted by Consumer Intelligence research company.

"Our findings show that this scandal has really hit consumers hard, be it through having to change their shopping habits or altering the fundamentals of their diet," David Black, a spokesman for Consumer Intelligence, said.

The online poll, conducted on February 14-15, questioned more than 2,200 adults on their spending habits following the horsemeat scandal. It gave no specific figures on how much meat people were buying, focusing only on broader trends.

More than 65 percent of respondents said they trusted food labels less as a result.

"(Brands) will have to put in place really stringent ways of checking that what's being delivered and what's on the label is indeed what's in there," Black said.

In the month since horsemeat was first identified in Irish beefburgers, no one is yet reported to have fallen ill from eating horse but many supermarkets and fast food chains are already struggling to save their reputations.

Governments across Europe have stressed that horsemeat poses little or no health risk, although some carcasses have been found tainted with a painkiller given to racehorses but banned for human consumption.

Environment secretary Owen Paterson, who met British retailers earlier in the day for talks on how to restore consumer confidence, said Britain was closely cooperating with European countries to investigate what happened.

"Looking ahead, there was absolute determination in the industry to restore confidence in their products," he said in televised remarks. "We look forward to meeting on a regular basis to absolutely make it clear that when consumers buy a product they get what they bought."

British retailers now expect the vast majority of tests on processed beef products to be completed by February 22, according to the British Retail Consortium.

LOCAL BUTCHERS

More than 60 percent of adults surveyed said they would now buy meat from their local butchers, the poll said, while a quarter of adults said they would now buy more joints, chops or steaks instead of processed meat.

Michael Suleyman, who owns a family-run butchers' shop in Brixton, London, said more customers appeared concerned although for now there had not been any difference in sales figures.

"We have seen people panicking and asking us lots of questions like 'where do you get your meat from?'," Suleyman, 51, told Reuters. "We assure our customers by showing them the meat and mincing it for them in front of their eyes."

But with inflation running above central bank targets and an uncertain job market, the spending power of British consumers has been eroded in recent years and, for some, buying more expensive meat is not an option.

Nearly a fifth of respondents said they wanted buy less processed meat such as ready-meals, but could not afford to.

At a London branch of Britain's biggest retailer, Tesco, which found horse DNA in some of its own-brand frozen spaghetti bolognese meals last week, consumers were still buying meat products.

"I've got nothing against horse meat," said Sean Cosgrove, 39, a local government employee. "I think you're being ambitious if you expect top quality meat in those products anyway."

Israel denies payments to family of Prisoner X

Ben Zygier.

Ben Zygier.

ISRAEL has denied making secret compensation payments to the Melbourne family of Ben Zygier over his 2010 death in a maximum-security prison, amid claims he was about to give evidence on the use of fake Australian passports by intelligence agency Mossad.

Israeli television station Channel 2 reported that no payment would be made unless negligence could be proven in Mr Zygier's alleged suicide, which occurred while the 34-year-old was under 24-hour surveillance in a ''suicide-proof'' cell.

The television report conflicted with claims by Israeli newspaper Haaretz that Mr Zygier's family had received ''millions of shekels in compensation'' following a secret 18-month judicial inquiry into the death.

Citing sources close to the affair, Haaretz also claimed Mr Zygier was negotiating a plea bargain with Israeli authorities, despite reports he had rejected previous offers of a deal.

Mr Zygier's family has refused to discuss his suspicious death, while his former lawyer Roi Belcher did not return calls to Fairfax Media.

Israeli authorities have only confirmed that their State Attorney's Office was investigating negligence as a possible cause of death, after imposing a court-ordered ban on any mention of his death. The secrecy has fuelled the mystery surrounding Mr Zygier's transformation from a Monash University law student to ''Prisoner X''.

Mr Zygier moved to Israel in his early 20s, where he lived on Kibbutz Gazit in the Galilee and served in the Israel Defence Forces, before marrying an Israeli woman in 2006.

In 2002, Mr Zygier returned to Australia and worked at Melbourne law firm Deacons. He returned again in 2009 to study for an MBA at Monash University.

It was during these trips that he attracted the attention of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) after changing his name on three occasions and obtaining new passports. One of the passports is believed to have been used by Mr Zygier when he was suspected of spying for Mossad in Iran.

Less than a year before his death, Mr Zygier is believed to have been questioned by ASIO.

Pistorius, slain girlfriend had planned future, uncle says

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - It was billed as a fitting tribute to "an intelligent, beautiful and amazing woman" but the airing of a Caribbean reality TV show featuring the girlfriend of Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius two days after she was shot dead has upset some South Africans.

In particular, women's rights activists criticized an edited clip at the start of Saturday night's 'Tropika Island of Treasure' in which law graduate and model Reeva Steenkamp talks about her "exit".

"I think that the way you go out, not just your journey in life but the way that you go out and you make your exit is so important," she says, leaning against a palm tree in a pre-recorded interview on the show's set in Jamaica.

At the end of the tribute, presumably recorded when she was voted off the show, she blows kisses to the camera and says: "I'm going to miss you all so much. I love you very, very much."

Pistorius was charged on Friday with murdering Steenkamp in the early hours of the previous day, although his family have denied the charge. Initial reports said Pistorius may have mistaken Steenkamp for an intruder.

Rachel Jewkes, a gender and health researcher at the South African Medical Research Council (MRC), said the clips were particularly insensitive in a country where a woman is estimated to be killed by her partner every eight hours.

"There was a big question about whether it should have been shown at all, or whether they were trying to get audience ratings off the fact she had died," Jewkes said.

"These sort of quotes don't make you feel any better about the suggestion they are exploiting her death."

Show producer Samantha Moon said the decision to air the program on Saturday as scheduled was difficult but ultimately she wanted to share the "special memories" of Steenkamp.

"Reeva was an intelligent, beautiful and amazing woman, and we feel it would be an injustice to keep that unknown from those who did not know her personally," Moon said.

Steenkamp, who was shot in the head, hand, chest and hip, according to domestic media reports, will be buried on Tuesday.

Many South Africans thought the decision not to delay the show until after the funeral was wrong.

"It was very insensitive to put it on air before she was even buried," said 30-year-old insurance consultant Montle Ndlovu. "It's such a sad story. She was young and pretty and had her whole life in front of her."

"NO SPECIAL TREATMENT"

The downfall of Pistorius, the first double amputee to run in the Olympics, has sent shockwaves through South Africa, where many saw him as a rare example of a hero who transcended the racial divides that linger in Nelson Mandela's "Rainbow Nation".

But the killing of Steenkamp has once again put a harsh spotlight on South Africa's frighteningly high levels of violence against women.

The country is still reeling from the murder this month of 17-year-old Anene Booysen, who was gang-raped, mutilated and left for dead on a building site.

Although sexual crime is all too common - on average a woman is raped every four minutes - the similarities to the murder of a New Delhi woman that triggered protests in India gave birth to an "Enough is Enough" campaign to halt the violence against women endemic in South African society.

The ruling African National Congress' Women's League called for the courts to deny bail to Pistorius to show the government was serious about stopping gender-based violence.

"Pistorius must be treated like any other person accused of such crimes and no special circumstances should be considered based on his celebrity status," the League said.

Pistorius is being held in a Pretoria police station until his bail hearing resumes on Tuesday. His family said on Saturday Pistorius was numb with grief and shock, and a pastor who visited him on Sunday said he was still distraught.

"The Holy Spirit gave me an order that this is now the chance to go pray with Oscar," pastor AJ Wilson told Reuters Television outside the police station.

"The (police) colonel told him that I have come to pray with him. He just cried and we all cried together."
