Albany mayor candidate Ellis takes up landfill issue

ALBANY - It's called the Albany Solid Waste Facility, but it accepts trash from many area communities.

That's helping to fill it faster than if only the city used it.

"Why can't we come together and solve this problem as a county-wide issue?" asked Corey Ellis, a democrat seeking?that party's nomination for Albany mayor.?"I always believe we have to begin the process of letting go of our territorial mindset and say we have to do what's best for the citizens."

Sixth Ward Council member Richard Conti said?"it's not just a city of Albany problem. We need to move forward on a regional approach."

But Albany County Executive Dan McCoy thinks a regional approach?"would be too tough."

Albany County legislators took preliminary steps towards a regional landfill in 2011.

Then the Town of Colonie made a deal to privatize its own landfill in exchange for significant yearly payments.

That flattened the regionalization move.

It's tough to imagine a county-wide landfill effort without the county's largest town, but the trash piles aren't going away and continue ever growing.

"We've looked at this in the legislature," said McCoy.?"We looked at a regional approach and when Colonie did their own deal,?it's hard now to do a regional approach because we'll be competing against Colonie."
