PORT EWEN, N.Y. ? Six students from Ulster BOCES are participating in the National Solar Car Challenge in which they will drive from Texas to southern California in a solar-powered car they built.

Students Christopher Reffelt, Tyler Wenzel, Miles Harris, Brittany Fatum, Joseph Cramer and Nicholas Martorano traveled to Texas on Friday. They next will travel in their solar-powered car from Snyder, Texas, to Los Angeles by way of New Mexico and Arizona.

Before the journey starts, the students? car will undergo a ?scrutineering? process, which is a 28-page technical review form validating that the car they built over the past two months meets all mechanical, electrical and safety guidelines. The first weekend of their eight-day trip also will include practice drive of the car at the Texas Motor Speedway, as well as participation in various meetings.?

The students are participating in the event under the team name Voltech, and the car is called Volt 2. They are participating in the challenge?s Advanced Division, which has two teams.

The Solar Car Challenge began in 1993, and now more than 65 schools in 20 states participate in the event, according to its website. The challenge ?is designed to motivate students in science, engineering and alternative energy,? the site states. ?Students learn how to design, engineer, build and race road-worthy solar cars.??
