English Premier League Champions Manchester United have today launched their official Twitter account ? @ManUtd.
Given how many sports franchises have begun using Twitter with great success, it is perhaps surprising that it took such a major sports brand so long to join up.?The club is promising exclusive access and content for fans via their Twitter account.
Using the new account, Manchester United have already start posting highly visual content. For example, they have tweeted a picture of defender Rio Ferdinand in the dressing room with the Premier League trophy, and a graphic of new manager David Moyes. Both those pieces of content have already been retweeted well over 2,000 times.
Manchester United have not ignored social media up to this point. The club have long had a huge Facebook following, with 34 million likes of its?official page, but had thus far avoided Twitter.?That all changed this morning at around 8.30, when the first tweet of the new account was posted.
Manchester United has also used that existing Facebook following to tell people it had joined the 140 character network too, but posting this image that plays on the famous chant sung by fans:
It?s a logical time for Manchester United to launch a new social media channel. The departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, a major social media event, heralds a new era in the club?s history. It is also the close season, so the channel has a chance to bed in before the football starts again, and the club can establish how they want to use it. It also means fans can be informed quickly of new player signings and other club news.
Manchester United?s rivals already have an established Twitter presence. Both Chelsea and Arsenal have over two million followers on the network. Manchester City, who famously defeated their neighbours to the league title the season before last, have over 993, 000 followers, and Tottenham Hostpur have 521, 909 followers. On the Wall we?ve previously looked at this, with the Premier League Twitter league table.
Manchester United are already catching up though. In the first morning that the account has been live it has attracted over 156,000 followers.
